The branch of medicine that deals with eyes and vision care are called ophthalmology. There are many diseases that are dealt with in ophthalmology some of which are Cataracts, Excessive tearing (tear duct obstruction), Proptosis (bulged eyes), Eye tumors, Diabetic retinopathy. Due to the fragility of the eye, this is one of the challenging areas of medicine. An ophthalmologist is trained to prescribe medicine as well as perform laser therapy and ocular surgery. The level of training is how an ophthalmologist differs from an optometrist and optician.
